About the original:
Painted in 2019, 'Devil and Clematis' was a Pen, Ink, and Watercolor work on 3D Paper (30 x 42 cm).
I made this painting with the intention of illustrating a book. The story was about how the devil came to have white areas of fur (spoiler: the jasmine did it). In the background there is a pattern which is taken from microscope slides of Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). I find it interesting that something so tiny and destructive can be made to look like an unassuming pattern.
What is DFTD?
Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) is an aggressive, non-viral, transmittable parasitic cancer that affects Tasmanian Devils. Small lesions or lumps, in and around the mouth, quickly develop into large tumours on the face and neck (and sometimes other parts of the body).
